Job Description
Plumbers play a crucial role in designing, installing, and maintaining the piping systems in residential, commercial, and industrial spaces. These skilled tradespeople ensure that water and gas systems are safe, efficient, and well-maintained. In addition to installations, plumbers are vital in troubleshooting issues, repairing leaks, and making sure that all installations comply with local and national codes and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
The primary duties of a plumber include the installation of new plumbing systems, maintenance of existing systems, and repair of plumbing appliances and fixtures. They must be able to read blueprints and understand building codes to accurately install fixtures and piping. Plumbers often work on water supply lines, waste disposal systems, and related appliances and fixtures to ensure they are operating correctly and efficiently.

Your Responsibilities
Specific tasks a plumber might be expected to perform include:
- Inspecting and diagnosing issues with piping systems and plumbing fixtures.
- Installing pipes and fixtures, such as sinks and toilets, for water, gas, steam, air, or other liquids.
- Repairing or replacing damaged or malfunctioning plumbing equipment.
- Clearing obstructions from sink drains and toilets.
- Collaborating with contractors, construction workers, electricians, pipefitters, and steamfitters in installing and repairing plumbing systems.
- Ensuring compliance with building codes and safety standards in all installations and repairs.
- Preparing cost estimates for clients.
Education and Certification Requirements
Candidates looking to pursue a career as a plumber should have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, though many employers prefer candidates who have completed a technical school program in plumbing. Plumber apprenticeships, which typically last four to five years, are invaluable for practical experience and typically required to become licensed. Licensing requirements vary by state but generally involve passing a specific exam. Continuous education and training are highly recommended to keep up with new technologies, codes, and practices.
Qualifications
- Technical Expertise: Plumbing/Drain knowledge is required, with a solid understanding of system operations and diagnostics.
- Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in office software and familiarity with field management tools.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to quality and safety.
- Pipe Installation & Repair: Ability to install, repair, and maintain various types of piping systems (e.g., PVC, copper, PEX, galvanized, Cast Iron)
- Fixture & Appliance Installation: Proficient in installing and servicing plumbing fixtures (e.g., sinks, faucets, toilets, water heaters)
- Pipe Soldering & Brazing: Skilled in soldering copper pipes and using other techniques for joining metals
- Threading & Fitting Pipes: Experience with threading and fitting pipes for various plumbing systems
- Leak Detection & Repair: Skilled in identifying leaks and resolving issues quickly and efficiently
- Drain Inspection, Cleaning, Snaking/Cabling, and Jetting: Proficient in using drain cleaning tools and machines (e.g., augers, hydro-jetters)
- Water Heater Installation & Repair: Knowledge of installing and servicing traditional and tankless water heaters

To Succeed in this Role
- You’ll need to self-manage as you’ll be alone often.
- You’ll need to speak with customers and provide excellent customer service while asking for reviews and collecting payments.

Job Requirements
These are the minimum requirements to be considered for this position.
- Live within the area
- 3-5 years of maintenance, service and repair plumbing experience, with strong troubleshooting skills (required)
- 1-3 years of construction (preferred)
- Proficiency with ServiceTitan (preferred)
- Valid driver's license with a clean record (required)
- Own your own tools
- Able to lift 50 pounds independently
- Able to safely work at heights and work overheard for extended periods of time
- Professional appearance and maintenance of company-provided vehicle
Benefits & Pay
The pay range for this position is $25 to $40 and is dependent on your experience as a professional handyman as well as your experience with other home repair and maintenance projects such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and drywall.
